Educating and Nurturing the Bipolar Child
by Janice Papolus ... Co-Author of The Bipolar Child
The NAMI Family of Marion/Crawford Counties in Ohio has purchased this TERRIFIC DVD. We will be using this resource in the education of our Parents and Teachers.
Janice Papolos speaking on behalf of the DVD “Educating and Nurturing the Bipolar Child”. Dear Friends,
The phrase "Back to School" means one thing for Target and Walmart, but quite another for us--parents of youngsters with bipolar disorder. Our children are up against great challenges as they attempt to fit in and feel right in the school environment. As parents, we need to work side-by-side with educators to ensure that our children get off to the right start. We need to help school personnel understand that, in addition to a mood disorder, our children often experience unrecognized, and insidious factors that severely impact their availability to learn. These include:
• Executive function deficits • Severe anxiety • Poor working memory • Difficulty with the concept of time • Difficulty with tasks requiring sequencing • Disorders of written expression • Reduced alertness in the morning (sleep inertia) The JBRF DVD “Educating and Nurturing the Bipolar Child” explains all of the factors above, and seems to be creating an amazing difference in the way educators in every state are viewing our children and instituting creative ideas to help them. In fact, NAMI Illinois has endorsed this DVD and is sending out order forms to each of the Illinois school districts as part of its October campaign for Mental Health Awareness Week. An especially heartwarming email was sent to us just last Friday from a teacher in Halifax who used the DVD for an in-service at school. She wrote:
“Yesterday I conducted a workshop for our teachers using your video. I do want to tell you that the teachers all loved the video and thought Janice was easy to listen to, entertaining, and relevant to our own personal situations with our children! She gave us some great ideas.” I hope this DVD makes a difference for your child and his or her teachers. The DVD is available at the Web site of the Juvenile Bipolar Research Foundation. Each is priced at $20 and all proceeds go toward supporting JBRF research. I wish you and your children all the best in this new school year, Jeanne Langer President Juvenile Bipolar Research Foundation
